Sea Pines Golf Course Description:An exciting links-style course, situated in the Gulf of Thailand
Sea Pines Golf Course -also known as the Army Golf Club II, plays along the Gulf of Thailand in the Suan Son Pradiphat (also known as Sea Pine Tree Garden). The Royal Forestry Department originally owned the track before being taken over by the Royal Thai Army under the rule of Field Marshall Sarit Thanarat, who was once the Prime Minister of Thailand between 1957-1963.
Most of the Sea Pines on the course, are bracken pine trees enriched by the minerals from both the ocean and mountains. The army developed the site to act as a form of retreat for the serving soldiers, veterans and their families.
The Course layout has been developed to provide golfers with a wide variety of challenges, on each of the holes. Depends on the wind conditions, the course can play from easy to exceedingly difficult. The course design has six holes running along the beachside and the rest of the holes head out towards the mountains, divided by the main railroad.
The par-5 12th hole is one of the most challenging holes on the course, as the design allows the green to be protected in the form of fairway bunkers and a water hazard along the right-hand side. A small bunker located towards the middle of the fairway, creates a situation from the Tee – go for the driver, or ‘play it safe’ by opting for a ‘lay-up’ approach.
Down the Home Stretch, the sea breeze will come into play, and the three final holes, have been rated amongst the best Hua Hin has to offer. The 16th Hole, a dogleg par-5 that requires an accurate drive the narrow fairway, downhill and avoiding the water hazards on both sides. The toughest part of this hole is the approach shot. You will need decide whether to cut over the water and bunker onto the sloping green or paly the safe route down the left side of the fairway.
The signature 17th is a par-3 which includes a spectacular ocean view in the background. The tee shot is all carry over the water, to a wide peninsula green that is well protected by beach bunkers both front and back. Any shot missing long or short will find the sand, best play for the centre of the green. The 17th plays tougher depending on the wind strength and pin placement.
The par-4 finishing hole is among the most difficult on the course. The canal which runs through the course, creates a major hazard that requires an accurate drive over 220 yards to reach the fairway on the other side, this canal will catch a lot of people out. A lay-up approach, to land before the canal, with a fairway wood is also an option for a solid par.
A modern style clubhouse overlooking the Gulf of Thailand serves up some great Thai and Western food. Please note;- Golf visitors must be aware, that Army officers and their guests have priority on booking Tee Times and other normal players must be prepared to wait if tee times overlap.
